2. Nathaniel Wales Dea. (Nathaniel1) was born about 1649 in Dorchester, Middlesex, MA.,1 died on 23 Mar 1718 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA1 about age 69, and was buried in Hancock Cemetery Quincy, MA (No Marker).

Research Notes: He was a weaver by trade, deposed Jan. 21, 1690/1 "aged 41 or thereabouts" (Mass. Arch. 36-313a). He was hailed before the selectmen of Dorchester Apr. 20, 1669 "for the inspection of his orderly walking", evidently he was a gay youth who later became an elder of the church. He came to Braintree about 1673 and bought of John Downing "all my house and housing" etc. which formerly did belong unto Richard Chapman. This became the Wales homestead and the house stood until burned Jan. 30, 1903 on Commercial St. nearly opposite Adams St. in Braintree and was still owned at the time by descendants. It was a salt box type with seaweed in the walls for insulation, but had been much modernized. In 1679 he took the oath of allegiance, and was admitted to Braintree Church Feb. 27, 1681 and his wife Joanna Jun. 15, 1684. He was selectman in 1693, 1696, 1798, 1700, tithingman 1694, Representative to General Court 1696, fenceviewer for Monatiquot 1699 and moderator of town meeting 1699, 1702-4, 1706. He was a deacon before 1696 and on Feb. 27, 1701 was ordained ruling elder in the church at now Quincy, a post he held till his death in 1718 1

Nathaniel married Elizabeth Billings about 1675 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA. Elizabeth was born on 27 Oct 1659 and died on 22 Oct 1676 at age 16.

15. Thomas Wales (Nathaniel Dea.2, Nathaniel1) was born on 19 Apr 1695 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA2 and died on 26 Sep 1775 in Randolf, Norfolk, MA.2 at age 80.

Research Notes: He was a blacksmith by trade, resided on the homestead until 1725. In 1724 he purchased land in the S.W. part of present Randolph on present Stoughton Road (also called Wales St. or Cincinnati Road) where his house was at the N.E. corner of Highland Ave, the cellar hole being visible until 1948 when it was built over. The old house burned shortly before 1900. Some of his descendants still reside on part of this homestead after 225 years. He and his wife were admitted to Braintree Church Jan. 10, 1720, but in 1731 they joined the present Randolph Church of which he became the first deacon, an office he held over 40 years. In 1720 he was elected hogreaves, constable in 1731 but refused to serve, selectman 1735-9, 1741, 1742, 1747, 1748 for the South Precinct, was on many town committees, and moderator of the town meeting in 1760. He also owned land adjoining his over the line in Stoughton (now Avon).

He left a will which was never probated dated Sep. 13, 1768, mentioning wife Sarah, eldest son Samuel, youngest son Ephraim, my home place to be divided between sons Atherton & Ephraim, and other lands between sons Samuel, Nathaniel & Moses, they paying my daughters Deborah Curtice & Mary Smith; Son Atherton Wales executor.

Thomas married Sarah Hayward on 7 Sep 1742.2 Sarah was born on 19 Oct 17052 and died after 1782.2

Thomas next married Mary Belcher on 13 Jan 1719.,2 daughter of Samuel Belcher and Comfort Harbour. Mary was born in Jun 1697 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA and died on 30 Jan 1741 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA at age 43.

Research Notes: No record of their deaths found except in papers contributed years ago to the Wales Family Assn, now at N.E. Hist. Gen. Society in Boston. He was a deacon in the So. Parish Church (now Randolph) but lived near the westerly end of Stoughton St. in present Avon, about 3/4 mile west from his father.
His homestead site, now barely visible in a field on south side of the road a little east of the ice pond was occupied by his son Nathaniel until his death in 1835. His estate was distributed to widow and thirteen children, and the widows dower was distributed to twelve surviving children. - Sprague fn 5309

General Notes: Joseph - b. Apr. 29, 1697, Braintree, Norfolk Co., MA; d. Jul. 18, 1767; bur. Central Cemetery, Randolph, MA. A weaver, he settled by 1727 at Randolph, MA, where he held positions as surveyor of highways and tithingman. Joseph and Hannah became members of the church at Randolph in 1731. It appears that the following entry in the Braintree records refers to Joseph prior to his marriage: "Joanna, ye daughter of Mehetable White, by Joseph Wales, (as she sais) was born 6th January 1720." Joanna WALES was married on Mar. 10, 1743 to Benjamin LUDDEN. Joseph WALES was married on May 7, 1723 to Hannah ALLEN (b. Sep. 25, 1704; d. Apr. 17, 1777; bur. Central Cemetery, Randolph, MA), daughter of Samuel ALLEN and Abigail WEBB.
