We had exciting visitors in the backyard this afternoon – our first of fall American Goldfinches!  I stepped out on the porch in the dull gray afternoon and heard “potato chip!  Potato chip!”  I promptly screeched for Rich, and we both watched with grins as three American Goldfinches descended on the niger feeder.  I didn’t have my camera handy, so I’m posting a photo taken last January.  But they are back!  I love their cheerful calls and their happy yellow colors.
